Abstract

1502673 Aqueous flux for hot dipping BASF AG 10 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 14726/75 Headings C7F and C7M A smokeless aqueous flux solution for use in hot galvanizing tinning or leading comprises water and a solute comprising 1 molar part ZnCl 2 and 0À7-2À4 molar parts KCl optionally with not more than 5 wt. per cent of the flux of NaCl and/or not more than 2À5% NH 4 Cl. The flux may also contain not more than 3 wt. per cent AlCl 3 . The solids content of the aqueous flux solution is 5-55 wt. per cent and up to 0À5 wt. per cent melting agents and up to 0À1 wt. per cent organic corrosion inhibitors can also be included. The article to be coated is dipped into the solution at 50-70‹C and after withdrawal the flux dries very rapidly. In an example an iron article is dipped into an aqueous solution containing 30 wt. per cent of a flux consisting of 53À9% ZnCl 2 , 44%KCl, 1À9% AlCl 3 -6H 2 O, 0À02% corrosion inhibitor and 0À2% melting agent. The article is then galvanized by dipping into a Zn bath at 460‹C.
