Abstract
A metal article is provided with a coating of a second metal by passing it through a molten bath thereof, the exposed surface of the molten bath through which the metal article enters and leaves the bath being protected by a covering layer of exfoliated vermiculite (a ferrous magnesium aluminium silicate mineral which is absorbent), thereby reducing fume emission from the bath and oxidation of the molten metal surface. In an example, Cu wire is passed through an acid pickling bath and then around a pulley immersed in a bath containing molten Sn, the surface of the bath being coated with a layer of exfoiated vermiculite 1/2 inch thick. The wire passes through a wiping device as it leaves the bath and is then cooled by passing up an inclined water cooling channel. Reference is also made to pickling and/or fluxing prior to coating, to coating with Sn/Pb alloys and to coating a wire which comprises a Cu coated Fe core.
