Abstract

<PICT:1030967/C6-C7/1> Apparatus in which a wire is coated with solder by hot dipping comprises an electrically heated molten tin/lead solder bath 1 through which Cu wire W passes over ceramic guide pulleys 4, 5 to a wiping die formed by a parallel hole 7 in a raft 6 of asbestos board floating freely on the surface of the bath. The die ensures a thin concentric coating and the raft prevents oxidation of the molten surface near the wire. The wire then passes through one or more mist quenching chambers 9 containing water/air spray nozzles, wherein the solder is hardened before the wire passes over a guide pulley 10 to a take up reel. A plate 15 prevents scum from wire entering the bath collecting under the raft and baffle plates 16 reduce turbulence effects which occur at high wire speeds. The raft may be of graphite and if necessary hollow, alternatively a steel or diamond die may be mounted on a raft. The wire may be acid pickled before coating and aged in steam after coating. The bath may contain several wire coating arrangements and the entire surface may have a floating cover with apertures for each raft.
