Abstract

Lubricating oils are regenerated while in use by passage through a chamber containing a mass of tablets of an alkaline earth metal carbonate and subsequent filtration or centrifugation to remove the oil-insoluble products formed by reaction of the carbonate with deleterious substances in the oil. The tablets may be 2 to 25 mm. cubes and may be formed with a binder such as albumin or formalin-treated gelatine. In Fig. 1, oil from engine 1 is pumped through a chamber of tablets 3 and filter or centrifuge 4 to a reservoir 5 where it is returned to the engine. Chamber <PICT:0836993/III/1> <PICT:0836993/III/2> <PICT:0836993/III/3> 3 may simply comprise cells of tablets 6 through which the oil is constrained to pass (Fig. 2) or the oil may be sprayed under pressure from nozzles 7 through latticed cells of tablets 8 as in Figs. 4 and 3 (not shown). The process is particularly applicable to diesel engines.
