Abstract
Phenol is recovered from its emulsion with water by injecting into the phenol/water emulsion, a minor proportion of ammonia gas or ammonium hydroxide to break the emulsion into a phenol phase and a water phase, and recovering the phenol phase. The concentration of ammonia or ammonia gas used may be between 0.1 and 1.0 per cent by weight of the emulsion, which may also contain a minor proportion of a mineral oil. The amount of ammonia gas or ammonium hydroxide used should preferably be that which raises the pH of the emulsion to 8-8.8.ALSO:High quality mineral lubricating oils are obtained from a mineral lubricating oil fraction by adding phenol together with a minor proportion of water to adsorb collectively the aromatic constituents, separating the raffinate phase, comprising the desired refined lubricating oil and phenol/water emulsion, and an extract phase, comprising the extracted constituents and phenol/water emulsion, removing the phenol/water emulsion from both phases and passing it to a settling zone, where is added a minor proportion of ammonia gas or ammonium hydroxide to break the emulsion, from which the phenol is then recovered and recycled to contact more lubricating oil.
