Abstract
527,299. Countercurrent extraction ; purifying oils. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. March 30, 1939, No. 9981. Convention date, June 4, 1938. [Class 91] In treating a gas or liquid with solvent in countercurrent in a tower containing contacting and distributing means, an alternate up and down movement is imparted to the phases by periodically varying the rate of feed of one or both phases and/or the rate of withdrawal of the phase collecting at the bottom. For example, lubricating oil is fed to a tower 3 through a pipe 4, phenol by a pipe 2 ; raffinate is withdrawn by a pipe 10, extract by a pipe 14 through a valve 15. Preferably the feeds are unvaried with the interface between solvent-rich and solvent-poor phases allowed to rise slowly in the space 9 to a predetermined point when it is dropped rapidly by opening the valve 15 fully for an interval, e.g. one-third the time it is fully or partially closed. The valve 15 may be operated electrically from a time clock. Solvents specified are sulphur dioxide, furfural, aniline phenol, dichlordiethyl ether, and nitrobenzene.
