Abstract
1309456 Naphthenic acid separation NYNASPETROLEUM AB 11 June 1970 [13 June 1969 13 March 1970] 28357/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] A method for separating a naphthenic acid from a mixture containing such an acid and hydrocarbons, such as high boiling mineral oils, comprises treating the mixture with an extraction agent for the acid at a temperature of from 10‹ C. below the boiling point of the extraction agent to slightly above the boiling point to form a solution of the alkali metal salt of the acid, the extraction agent comprising an alkali metal hydroxide and a mixture of water and methanol which contains at least 70 wt. per cent methanol, and the ratio between the crude mixture and the extracting agent being from 5 :1 to 1 : 1, separating the solution from the remainder of the hydrocarbon-containing mixture and, if desired, treating the solution with a stronger acid to liberate the naphthenic acid. The hydrocarbon phase may be washed with a solvent, e.g. methanol, the solvent driven off by distillation and the residual oil optionally redistilled and bleached to produce a neutral lubricating oil.
