Abstract

A process for the production of naphthenic and paraffinic lubricating oils from an atmospheric residuum comprises introducing the said residuum into a combination treating zone, introducing a solvent having a preferential selectivity for aromatic-type constituents as compared to paraffinic-type constituents into the upper area of said combination zone, introducing a deasphalting solvent into the lower area of said combination zone, removing a deasphalted raffinate phase from the top region of the said combination zone, passing said raffinate to a heart-cut tower zone, introducing a solvent having a preferential selectivity for aromatic-type constituents as compared to paraffinic-type constituents into the said heart-cut tower zone, withdrawing a raffinate phase comprising paraffinic-type constituents from the top of said heart-cut tower and withdrawing an extract phase comprising naphthenic-type constituents from the bottom region of said tower zone. The selective solvent may be phenol, phenol-cresol mixture, furfural, nitrobenzene or dichloroethyl ether. The deasphalting solvent may be ethane, propane, butane or pentane.
