Abstract
A process for separating a plurality of aromatic hydrocarbons from the benzene series from a mixture thereof with non-aromatic hydrocarbons comprising introducing the mixture into a multi-phase extraction system in countercurrent at an intermediate point; introducing a glycolic selective solvent that is essentially immiscible with non-aromatic hydrocarbons within an extremity of the extraction contact system with the hydrocarbon phase thereof; maintain the extraction system under sufficient pressure to keep the flowing content liquid and maintain the flowing content of the extraction zone at a temperature above 40ºC to remove refined substantially free of aromatics and free of glycol from the same end of the system as that one in which the solvent was introduced; remove the glycolic extract rich in chromatics from the other end of the system, perform a previous separation of said extract under evaporative conditions to release the most valuable aromatic thereof together with non-aromatics of equivalent volatility to condense the vapors thus released and return the condensed to the extraction system near said other end; driving the rest of the extract to a heated area; separating the aromatic hydrocarbons from the solvent in said zone; subjecting the aromatic hydrocarbons to rectification and returning the solvent substantially free of hydrocarbons to the extraction system.
