Abstract

Lubricating oil is extracted with a solvent selective for aromatic hydrocarbons, and a heavy catalytically cracked oil is extracted with the extract phase; an improved aromatic oil is obtained by removing solvent from the resulting extract phase. Selective solvents referred to are furfural, phenol, nitrobenzene, sulphur dioxide, cresylic acids and sulpholane; the extraction of lubricating oil may be continuous or batchwise. The catalytically cracked oil may have an initial B.P. of at least 260 DEG C. The raffinate from the extraction of the cracked oil contains paraffins from the lubricating oil and the cracked oil and may be separated into higher and lower M.W. fractions; the higher M.W. fraction may be blended with the raffinate from the first extraction. If the blend of raffinate is to be used as a lubricating oil, it may be dewaxed, e.g. by solvent dewaxing.
