Abstract

Lubricating oils are produced by contacting a mixture of a lubricating oil fraction produced by catalytically cracking gas oil and a lubricating oil fraction from a paraffinic crude oil, with a selective solvent for aromatic compounds and separating the raffinate. The gas oil fraction and both lubricating oil fractions may boil in the range 650 DEG to 1100 DEG F. The gas oil, e.g. a petroleum oil, may be cracked at 800-1000 DEG F. and atmospheric to 25 p.s.i.g. pressure using a modified natural or synthetic clay or a gel, e.g. montmorillonite clays, silica-alumina and silica-magnesia. Selective solvents referred to are SO2, phenol, furfural and nitrobenzene; phenol may be employed with up to 10 per cent of water as a solvent modifier. The lubricating oils may be dewaxed separately or the mixture may be dewaxed before or after solvent extraction; solvent dewaxing, e.g. with propane or methyl ethyl ketone, may be used. The mixture of lubricating oils may consist of 10-60 per cent of the cracked oil. The finished oil may be clay-treated.
