Abstract

A motor fuel composition comprises an hydrocarbon fuel containing up to 5 volume per cent of a silica gel extracted bright stock containing less than 5 weight per cent of aromatic hydrocarbons. The preferred hydrocarbon fuel is gasoline; others mentioned are diesel, jet engine, and turbine fuels. The composition may include other additives, e.g. dimethyl carbinol. The bright stock may also be deasphalted, solvent extracted and dewaxed. Deasphalting may be effected with 4 to 12 volumes of light hydrocarbons, e.g. propane and/or butane at 100 DEG to 160 DEG F. to give a product of 200 to 250 SUS/210 DEG F. and a Conradson carbon content below 1 weight per cent. Solvent extraction may be effected with phenol, furfural, sulphur dioxide, ammonia or nitrobenzene to produce a viscosity of 100 to 150 SUS/210 DEG F. and a V.I. above 100. Solvent dewaxing to a pour point below 30 DEG F. may be effected with 2 to 4 volumes of a solvent, e.g. propane or methyl-ethyl-ketone. The silica gel treatment is preferably effected with 3 to 6 parts by weight of silica gel of 28/200 mesh at 50 DEG to 100 DEG F.
