Abstract

1295501 Lubricating oils TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 10 June 1970 [30 June 1969] 28061/70 Heading C5E Lubricating oils of high viscosity index and good U.V. stability are prepared by solvent refining a lubricating oil fraction, hydrocracking the refined oil and solvent refining the hydrocracked oil. The fraction can be a distillate or a residual which can be deasphalted. The hydrocracking is carried out at 700-900‹ F. and 500-5000 p.s.i.g. using a catalyst comprising Mo, Cr or W together with Co, Fe or Ni on a support of decationized zeolite, alumina, zirconia, silica or magnesia and which can be promoted with boron oxide or halogen. The solvent refining step can be carried out with furfural, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, nitrobenzene, dimethyl formamide or liquid sulphur dioxide. The raffinate from the second extraction can be dewaxed by cooling in a mixture of benzene or toluene together with, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone or n-butyl ketone or by catalytic hydrogenation at 450-800‹ F. and a pressure of 100-1500 p.s.i.g. using a catalyst comprising an acid treated mordenite support.
