Abstract

1493928 Lubricating oils SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MATTSCHAPPIJ BV 16 Dec 1974 [18 Dec 1973] 54257/74 Heading C5E High viscosity index lubricating oils are produced by catalytically cracking a heavy hydrocarbon feed comprising one or more foots oils (i.e. the components remaining after higher melting point waxes have been separated from slack wax) in the presence of hydrogen. The foots oil can be obtained from brightstock slack wax which has been obtained by deasphalting, extracting with furfural and then dewaxing by either sweating the slack wax or dissolving the wax in solvent and cooling to crystallize higher melting point waxes to leave a foots oil-solvent mixture. The feed treated can also comprise a waxy lube oil vacuum distillate, slack wax from waxy lube oil vacuum distillate, brightstock waxy raffinate or from lube oil fractions obtained by hydrocracking a deasphalted oil. The hydrocracking can be carried out at 325-450‹ C. and 10-250 bar; in examples, catalysts comprising (A) 37 parts by weight nickel, 70 parts tungsten, 14 parts fluorine and 100 parts alumina and (B) 10 parts nickel, 20 parts molybdenum, 2 parts phosphorus, 2À5 parts fluorine and 100 parts alumina are used after sulphiding with a hydrogen/hydrogen sulphide mixture. The hydrocracked oil can be hydrofinished, distilled and then dewaxed with the separated wax being recycled to the hydrocracking. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,390,359.
