Abstract

1402821 Lubricating oils BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 18 Jan 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 6388/73 Heading C5E Lubricating oils are produced by separating a petroleum fraction into at least one lighter fraction and at least one heavier fraction boiling above 350‹ C., subjecting at least a portion of the lighter fraction to a hydro-catalytic dewaxing process and a solvent extraction process for the removal of aromatics and subjecting at least a portion of the heavier fraction to a hydro-catalytic viscosity index improvement process and a solvent dewaxing process. Atmospheric residue having an initial boiling point of 250‹ C. is separated in the vacuum distillation columns 1 and 2 to provide light ends 11 and 12 boiling below 350‹ C., distillate fractions A, B, C, D, A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>1</SP> and D<SP>1</SP> and residual fractions E and E<SP>1</SP>. The fractions A, B and C are catalytically dewaxed at 5, e.g. using a catalyst of platinum on decationized, acid treated (to decrease the Al 2 O 3 : SiO 2 ratio) mordenite at 250-500‹ C. and then extracted with furfural at 7. The residual fractions E and E<SP>1</SP> are deasphalted with propane at 3 and 4. The hydrogenation at 6 is suitably carried out at 340-460‹ C. using a catalyst comprising cobalt and molybdenum on a silica-alumina support. The solvent dewaxing at 8 can be carried out using methyl isobutyl ketone. The vacuum gas oil cuts 11 and 12, suitably boiling from 210-410‹ C., can be treated by catalytic dewaxing and furfural extraction to provide transformer oils.
