Abstract

A lubricating oil is prepared by hydrogenating a petroleum oil rich in polycyclic hydrocarbons and containing nitrogen compounds, being selected from the following: bright stock, solvent refined neutral distillate, naphthenic lube raffinate, or an aromatic extract of a naphthenic crude lube distillate, by contacting said oil with a high metal content sulphided nickel - molybdenum - alumina catalyst containing 3-10% wt. nickel and 12-30% wt. molybdenum, in the presence of excess hydrogen at a partial pressure of over 800 p.s.i.a., a temperature of 600-800 DEG F., and a space velocity of 0.2-3 LHSV, these parameter being controlled to remove a specified fraction of the nitrogen content of the oil and thereby to obtain a lube oil product improved to a desired extent in colour and in at least one other property selected from: viscosity, viscosity index, pour point, oxidation stability, and additive response. The starting material may be obtained by distilling naphthenic crude petroleum and solvent extracting the distillate, for example with phenol. The extract, containing aromatics and nitrogen compounds, may also be hydrogenated by the process of the invention, and the product may be distilled to give lube oil and jet fuel fractions.
