Abstract
A multi-grade lubricating oil is produced by treating a deasphalted residuum having a V.I. between 75 and 100 and a viscosity at 99 DEG C. of between 90 and 200 S.U.S. with hydrogen at a temperature between 391 DEG C. and 441 DEG C. at a pressure above 175 kgs. per sq. cm. at a space velocity between 0.4 and 1.5 v/v/hr. and in the presence of a catalyst which promotes aromatic hydrogenation and ring sciosion and subjecting the product from the hydrogen treatment to distillation to separate fractions having a viscosity index of at least 115 and within the maximum and minimum viscosity limits for a multi-grade lubricating oil, i.e. an oil which has the minimum and maximum viscosities for two or more viscosity grades of oil ordinarily used in automotive or internal combustion engines at different times of the year or at different temperatures. The fuel is preferably obtained by vacuum distillation of a Pennsylvania, Mid-continent, West Texas, or Kuwait crude and subsequent deasphalting with a low-boiling hydrocarbon such as propane, propylene or butane, or less satisfactorily with sulphuric acid, phenol or sulphur dioxide. The catalyst employed for the hydrogenation may be a sulphide of any metal of the Group VI left hand column of the Periodic System mixed with a sulphide of an iron metal group. Specified catalysts are molybdenum sulphide, tungsten sulphide or chromium sulphide mixed with a sulphide of iron, cobalt or nickel. Dewaxing may be effected before or after the hydrogenation step using a solvent such as methyl ethyl ketone, toluene or propane and cooling and filtering off the wax. Additives which may be blended with the product include Acryloid, a detergent comprising a mixture of barium thiophenate and calcium sulphonate, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate, metal phenates, metal naphthenates, alkylated phenols and P2S5-terpene reaction products. In a typical Example, (No. 1) an Ordovician reduced enide was deasphalted and preheated to 382 DEG C. and passed over a mixed nickel sulphide-tungsten sulphide catalyst at 393 DEG C. and 0.5 liquid hourly space velocity, using 140 standard cubic metres of hydrogen per barrel. The product after a high pressure separation of hydrogen was topped at atmospheric pressure and fractionated to remove a gasoline and furnace oil. The remainder was dewaxed with methyl ethyl ketone and then 10 W/20 and 20 W/30 multi-grade oils separated.
