Abstract

1,270,438. Lubricating oils. SUN OIL CO. 30 June, 1969 [3 July, 1968], No. 32865/69. Heading C5E. Lubricating oils are produced by (a) fractionating a charge stock into a plurality of fractions boiling above 650‹ F.; (b) extracting at least one fraction having an upper boiling range limit of up to 1000‹ F. with 0À25-6 volumes of a solvent having preferential solubility for aromatics; (c) combining the raffinate from (b) with a lower boiling fraction of the charge stock; and (d) hydrocracking the combined feed from (c) at 650-825‹ F. and at a hydrogen partial pressure of 2000-3000 p.s.i. in the presence of a hydrocracking catalyst at a liquid hourly space velocity of from 0.2 to 4.0 to increase its viscosity index. Suitable extractive solvents are furfural, acetophenone, phenol, acetonitrile, nitrobenzene, aniline, 2,2-dichloroethyl ether and dimethylsulphoxide and may contain water. Suitable hydrocracking catalysts comprise either a sulphide of a Group VIa metal together with a sulphide of a Group VIII metal on alumina, silica or alumina-silica support or palladium on a molecular sieve. The hydrocracked oil can be subjected to a shallow selective extraction either in bulk or after fractionation or subjected to hydrofinishing at 450- 650‹ F. using a catalyst comprising a sulphide of a metal of Group IVa together with a sulphide of a metal of Group VIII on alumina. An atmospheric residue 3 is fractionated into a fraction 14 boiling from 700‹ to 850‹ F., a fraction 9 boiling from 850 to 1000‹ F. and a fraction 6 boiling above 1000‹ F. which is either deasphalted with propane and then solvent extracted or subjected to a combined deasphalting and solvent extraction process.
