Abstract
1,135,096. Treating asphalt. MOBIL OIL CORP. 29 June, 1966 [29 June, 1965], No. 29205/66. Heading C5E. Petroleum asphalt, derived from the thermal processing of petroleum hydrocarbons, having a specific gravity of at least 1À1, is polymerized in the presence of oxygen at a temperature in the range 700‹ to about 850‹ F. (371‹ to 454‹ C.) to produce an asphalt of increased specific gravity, e.g. 1-25. The oxygen may be provided by blowing with air or oxygen, or by supplying organic or inorganic peroxides to the reaction. Preferred petroleum hydrocarbons are those, e.g. straight-run fractions, employed to make gasoline, the aromatic residues therefrom (B.R. 400‹ to 1200‹ F.) providing the asphalt to be polymerized. The blowing rate must be in the range 2 to 12-8 SCF per minute of air per barrel of initial asphalt, and from 60 SCF to 140 SCF of oxygen per barrel may be required to complete the blowing.
