Abstract

1,216,792. Bituminous composition. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 9 July, 1969, No. 34705/69. Heading C3N. A bituminous material having a penetration index of from + 1 to + 7, a penetration at 25‹ C. of 5-200 (0À1 mm.) and a staining number below 30 is produced by mixing a component (1) being a bituminous fraction having a penetration index larger than + 5 and a penetration at 25‹ C. below 7 (0À1 mm.), a component (2) being a bituminous fraction having a penetration index below +1 and a penetration at 25‹ C. between 5 and 500 (0À1 mm.), and a component (3) being a bitumen fluxing agent having a maltene index not higher than 0À53 and an n-C 7 -asphaltenes content below 2% by weight. Component (1) may contain n-C 5 -asphaltenes, component (2) may be a precipitate obtained by treating a residual asphaltic oil with liquid propane, whilst component (3) may be a residue obtained from the sub-atmospheric distillation of a hydrocarbon oil. The bituminous material may be employed in the form of cutbacks, preferably 40-70% by weight of bituminous material and between 60-30% of a volatile organic solvent.
