Abstract
547,530. Modifying petroleum bitumen. STIRLING, J. F. March 19, 1941, No. 3746. [Class 91] [Also in Groups V and XII] Bituminous materials, e.g. tars, pitches, asphalts or asphalt mastics are hardened &c. by adding in the molten or plastic state one or more metallic and/or oxidizing non-metallic nitrates, which may be acidified with nitric acid. The nitrate, e.g. of copper or zinc may be added as a slow stream of aqueous solution or mixed with an inert material, e.g. sand, limestone, silica, or slate powder. The material may be maintained at 175‹C. or below until foaming has ceased whereupon it may be discharged or may be further heated up to 200‹C. for further hardening. An example specifies 3 to 4 pounds of cupric nitrate in 1¢ to 2 gallons of water added to 200 pounds of a petroleum residual bitumen. The colour of the material may be changed to dark brown by the treatment. According to the Provisional Specification nitric acid may be used.
