Abstract

A hot rolled asphalt having a bitumen binder which homogeneously incorporates up to 30% by weight of pitch is prepared by adding the pitch and bitumen separately to the aggregate. The aggregate is heated to 160 DEG C. and either cold powdered pitch or molten pitch at 130 DEG C.-135 DEG C. is then added and mixed followed by the addition of straight run bitumen at 145 DEG C. The pitch used is a normally solid residue from coal tar distillation and the bitumen is the distillation product from asphaltic petroleum crude oil. The composition of the final asphalt mix is 20% stone, 71% sand and filler and 9% binder comprising 2 1/4 % pitch powder and 6 3/4 % bitumen.
