Abstract

1518096 Thermoplastic compositions BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 3 Oct 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 44760/74 Heading C3M Flexible compositions comprise (1) 2 to 500 parts by weight of chlorinated polyolefin having a chlorine content of 15 to 40 wt. per cent per 100 parts by weight of (2) hardened extract of petroleum origin having a saturated hydrocarbon content of not more than 10 wt. per cent and which may be obtained by blowing with air at 250 to 350‹ C. extracts obtained by solvent extraction of distillate petroleum fractions boiling in the range 350 to 600‹ C. The chlorinated polyolefin may be chlorinated polyethylene or polypropylene, and may be prepared in situ by chlorinating a mixture of polyolefin and hardened petroleum extract. The compositions may contain minor proportions, relative to the extract, of bitumen and/or another polymer, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene or polychloroprene, optionally with curing agents, or 1 to 500 per cent by weight of the composition of filler. They may be used to form coatings or membranes, e.g. for water storage or roofing damp courses.
