1340001 Bitumen/1-butene polymer compositions CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 19 April 1971 [18 April 1970] 27182/71 Heading C3N [Also in Divisions D1 and F2] A thermoplastic composition comprises (a) as a major proportion of the composition, bitumen in an amount more than 95% by weight (based on the weight of (a) and (b)) and (b), as a thermoplastic resin, a 1-butene polymer dissolved therein in an amount less than 5% by weight (based on the weight of (a) and (b)). The term "1-butene polymer" is defined as homopolymers of 1-butene and copolymers of 1- butene with one or more other monomers, e.g. olefins (C 2-20 ). The composition may also contain a minor proportion of polyethylene, isoatactic polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, ethylene-acrylic acid ester copolymers, styrene-butadiene rubber, natural rubber, polychloroprene, ethylene-propylene rubber, flux oils, tar oils, pitches, colophony, linseed oils and epoxide resins. The composition may be produced by first forming a concentrate of 40-80 parts by weight of 1-butene polymer and 60-20 parts by weight of bitumen and then adding the required amount of bitumen so that the final composition conforms with the above Specification. The molecular weight and ether-extractable contents of representative 1-butene polymers are specified. The compositions find particular application in (a) road making; (b) impregnating, covering, coating or sizing papers and fabrics; and (c) coating pipes.
