Abstract

A continuous process for refining mineral lubricating oil fractions in order to improve their oxidation- and colourstability and to reduce their tendency to foam, comprises continuously contacting the fraction in a first zone with an aqueous extracting agent comprising an aqueous mixture of a monohydric alcohol having 1-5 carbon atoms per molecule and an alkali metal base or alkaline earth base, contacting the treated fraction countercurrently in a second zone with water and recovering the washed fraction for drying and further refining. The monohydric alcohol is recovered from the spent aqueous extracting agent. The process may be used to supplement other refining processes such as solvent refining, dewaxing, acid-treating and clay-treating. Thus, an oil refined according to the process of the invention may be treated with concentrated sulphuric acid and Fuller's earth. The monohydric alcohol may be methyl or ethyl alcohol, while the basic material may be a carbonate or hydroxide, particularly sodium hydroxide.
