Dry processes of extracting and refining magnesium. - Alloys or mixtures containing magnesium and a metal which will react with an alkali, particularly zinc, are treated in a bath of molten alkali such as caustic soda or potash, whereby the zinc or the like reacts with the alkali and the magnesium is liberated. Crude magnesium may have added to it a small percentage of zinc or similar metal and may then be treated by the above process for the production of pure magnesium.
