Abstract

Lubricants are obtained by mixing with lubricating oils or greases a lubricant prepared synthetically in presence of elementary sulphur or of such organic sulphur compounds as are anti-oxidants. 0,1--10,0 per cent of synthetic is a suitable addition. Antioxidants specified are thio-acetaldehyde, thiazole, thiocresol, thionaphthol, thionaphthene, thiobenzamide, dimethyl-thiophene, amino-thiophene, ethyl mustard oil, dihydroxypropyl sulphide, toluene sulphamide, amino-diphenylsulphone, diamino-diphenyl sulphide, diphenyl thiourea. 0,5--15,0 per cent of antioxidant may be present. The synthetic may be prepared by "voltolization"; polymerization or condensation, e.g. of olefines, mineral or tar oils, waxes, fats, high molecular acids or alcohols, in presence of aluminium chloride, zinc chloride, iron chloride, or like catalyst; or by hydrogenation of rubber, resins, or other polymers of high m.w. For example: (1) a mixture of 100 lb. of hard paraffin wax, 30 lb. of ceresine, and 0,5 lb. of sulphur, is treated for 45 hrs. at 80 DEG C. and a pressure of 5--10 mm. with silent electric discharges of 7000 volts and 1000 periods, and is then free from unchanged wax and from low-boiling constituents by vacuum distillation. 1 lb. of the product is added to a petroleum machine oil whereby the oil is stabilized and its setting point is reduced by 25 DEG C. (2) 100 lb. of chlorinated paraffin wax is condensed at 30--40 DEG C. for 24 hrs. with 5 lb. of benzene and 10 lb. of diphenyl sulphide in presence of kerosene and aluminium chloride and zinc oxide. The inorganic materials, diluent, and low boiling products are removed and 3 lb. of the synthetic is added to 100 lb. of machine oil.
