Abstract
Residues obtained after refining heavy mineral oils, tar oils &c. with alkalies, or after the treatment of hydrocarbons with the same to effect polymerization, are treated by destructive hydrogenation in the presence or absence of catalysts to produce products of lower boiling point. The pressures employed may vary from 5 to 1000 atmospheres at temperatures of from 300-700 DEG C., preferably 370-500 DEG C. The catalysts used are compounds of the sixth group of the periodic table, e.g. oxides of molybdenum, tungsten or chromium, or cobalt sulphide. Examples are given of the destructive hydrogenation of residues resulting from the refining of mineral oils by treatment first with fuming sulphuric acid and then with alkali.
