Abstract

The separation of diacetone alcohol from unchanged acetone is effected by distillation under ordinary pressure in the presence of added water, which may be 10 per cent by volume of the diacetone alcohol. By the time the temperature in the still reaches 105 DEG --107 DEG C. practically the whole of the acetone and some of the water will have distilled off. The rest of the water is then distilled off under considerably reduced pressure so as to prevent the temperature rising above about 105 DEG C., and finally the diacetone alcohol is distilled. Alternatively the initial stages of the distillation may be effected before the addition of water, which however must be added before the temperature reaches 105 DEG C.
