Abstract

In the manufacture of alkali alcoholates by removal of water from a mixture of an alcohol and alcoholic alkali, the alcoholic alkali is caused to flow in countercurrent to the alcohol vapour. To facilitate the removal of water vapour, a suitable auxiliary liquid, such as benzine, benzene, or a non-hydrolyzable ether may be introduced into the still. Examples are given of the preparation of sodium ethylate, and sodium and potassium butylates.
