Abstract

Rubber is plasticized by subjecting it in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, preferably at about 50 lb. per sq. in., to a depolymerizing temperature, i.e., above about 330 DEG F. Various treating agents for example softening agents such as stearic, oleic and acetic acids, asphalt, pine tar, oils &c., or wetting-agents such as petroleum sulphonic acids may be incorporated in the rubber by adding the treating agents to the rubber without substantial mixing and then subjecting the mass to the carbon dioxide treatment.
