Abstract
257,024. Sensicle, L. H May 21, 1925. Tar.-Tar for road-making &c. purposes is dehydrated by treatment in a centrifugal separator followed by forcing air through the resulting mass at a temperature sufficiently high to reduce the moisture content to about one-half per cent without distillation. The tar or mixture of tars is heated by a steam coil 6 to about 40‹ C. in a container 1 and forced by compressed air from a pipe 8 to a centrifugal separator 2 the tar on entry being heated by a steam pipe 4 to 55‹ to 60‹ C. The partially dehydrated tar is then passed to a vessel 5 in which it is maintained at 60‹ and treated with compressed air from a pipe 9. During agitation, bitumen is added when necessary and the free carbon content adjusted by adding the material removed from the bowl of the separator 2 in the cleaning operation. The viscosity may be adjusted and the content of naphthalene and light oil reduced by similar treatment, and creosote or anthracene oil fractions, or pitch, may be added before or after dehydration.
