Abstract

A carburizing substance for addition to molten steel comprises calcined limestone which has been impregnated with a carburizing substance, such as bitumen or pitch, either under pressure or vacuum or by subjecting it to prolonged heating in an open vessel. The substance so produced may also be used after it has been subjected to a preliminary distillation to remove its volatile matter.
