Abstract

A volatile spirit suitable for use as petrol and containing aromatic and aliphatic constituents is obtained by cracking crude oils, asphalts, creosotes, &c. in presence of catalysts comprising a halogenated oxygen compound of nitrogen, e.g. nitrosyl chloride and a mixture of aluminium and iron chlorides. The method of carrying out the process and the apparatus used are the same as described in Specification 430,748.
