Abstract
257,912. X. G., Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Sept. 2, 1925, [Convention date]. Mineral and tar oils, extracting and purifying. -Prior to the destructive hydrogenative of coal, mineral cils, tars. &c., in the usual manner the coal &c. is treated, under pressure and at a temperature higher than that at which it commences to decompose, with water or steam mixed or not with hydrogen, whereby the sulphur is largely converted into sulphuretted hydrogen and is separated in solution in the condensed water. For example the sulphur content of a mineral oil is reduced from 3.8 to 1.0-1.4 per cent by treatment with iron or copper or their oxides in known manner, and the oil is passed with 5 times the theoretical quantity of water vapour, mixed or not with hydrogen, at 200 atmospheres and 500-550‹ C., over a contact mass containing iron and manganese. The condensed aqueous solution of sulphuretted hydrogen is removed, and the oil now containing only 0.05-0.1 per cent of sulphur is passed with hydrogen at about 200 atmospheres and 500‹ C. over a catalyst containing molybdenum.
