Abstract
Catalyst used in the destructive hydrogenation of oils, and not susceptible to sulphur poisoning, is reactivated by separating it from the oil and treating it with hydrogen, preferably at an elevated pressure such as 50 atmospheres or more and at a temperature not above 700 DEG F. The hydrogen is preferably free from hydrocarbons liquid at normal temperature: gases from a hydrogenation retort may be used after cooling and scrubbing with oil under pressure. If unpurified hydrogen is used, the catalyst should preferably be treated with substantially pure hydrogen for a short period before return to the retort. Catalysts specified are the oxides and sulphides of chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, aluminium, zinc, and of the metals of the alkali, alkaline earth, and rare earth groups.
