Abstract

275,662. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Aug. 7, 1926, [Convention date]. Hydrogenation, destructive.-In the production of hydrocarbons of low boiling point by the destructive hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials by heating the materials under high pressure in presence of hydrogen but in the absence of carbon monoxide, deposition of carbon on the walls of the apparatus is avoided as described in Specifications 268,796 and 271,451 by lining not only the walls of the reaction vessel but also the other parts of the apparatus which come into contact with the hot reacting substances with materials not giving rise to the deposition of carbon or the formation of methane. Alloys containing cobalt, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, and manganese are suitable and these alloys may also contain nickel, boron, arsenic, antimony, silicon, bismuth, phosphorus, or selenium alloyed therewith or in co-operation on the surface thereof. If the reacting materials are freed from sulphur, copper also may be used. Alloys in which the boundaries between the crystal grains are free from impurities, as determinable by microscopic examination, are especially suitable. The alloys have also catalytic action on the reacting materials. Specifications 272,556 and 273,712 also are referred to.
