Abstract
A process for the substantially complete removal of contaminating nitrogen-containing compounds from a distillable hydrocarbon oil comprises contacting the hydrocarbon oil together with from 500-10,000 S.C.F. of H2/bbl. at a temperature of 500-850 DEG F., a pressure of from 200-4000 p.s.i.g., and a liquid hourly space velocity of 0.2-10 with a sulphided Ni-Mo-Al2O3 catalyst containing 4-10% Ni and 15.5-30% Mo prepared by sulphiding the corresponding oxides (see Division B1). A typical hydrocarbon oil which is purified thus is a light cycle oil having a gravity of 25.4 API., an initial boiling point of 415 DEG F. an end point of 550 DEG F. and an initial intregen content of 900 p.p.m. Examples describe the treatment of cracked naphtha, coker distillate, Arabian gas oil, heavy cycle oil and cat-cracker feed.ALSO:A hydrodenitrification catalyst consists essentially of Ni and Mo sulphides on a predominantly alumina support and contains from 4-10% Ni and from 18,9-30% Mo in a weight ratio Ni to Mo of 0,2-0,5, which catalyst has been contacted in the oxide form with a sulphiding gas, e.g. H2S, to convert NiO and MoO3 predominantly to sulphides to obtain high selective activity for the hydrogenative removal of nitrogen-containing compounds from hydrocarbon streams. Other sulphiding agents mentioned are CS2, a mercaptan or a sulphide. Minor amounts of Co, Zn or Cu do not impair the catalyst's activity. Alumina supports used preferably have a pore volume above 0,4 cc./gm. and a surface area above 150 sq.m./gm. Comparative examples are given. U.S.A. Specification 2,758,957 is referred to.
