Abstract

A process for the removal of nitrogen compounds from a hydrocarbon fraction comprises contacting it at 400 DEG to 800 DEG F. and a pressure of up to 2000 p.s.i.g. and in the presence of hydrogen with a catalyst comprising a hydrogenating component disposed on an aluminacontaining refractory oxide support, the support being modified by the inclusion therein of from 0.01 to 5% by weight of the total catalyst of either lithium or magnesium. The hydrogenating component may be a platinum-group metal, or molybdenum sulphide or oxide combined with nickel or cobalt sulphide or oxide. The support may be alumina, alumina-silica or alumina-boric and may contain phosphorus or fluorine. In examples the catalyst is compared with an otherwise similar material containing potassium but no lithium or magnesium.
