Abstract

Fluorine is redistributed throughout a catalyst mass comprising the oxides of cobalt and molybdenum supported on alumina and containing a small proportion of unevenly distributed combined fluorine by passing steam or steam-containing gas over the catalyst at an elevated temperature, e.g. 700-900 DEG F., without recycle. The catalyst may contain 1-6 per cent by weight of fluorine and the uneven distribution may have resulted from hot recycle regeneration of the catalyst, in which the greater part of the combustion products is recycled. During treatment with steam the outlet end of the catalyst mass may be maintained at a lower temperature than the inlet end, for example by commencing with a uniform catalyst temperature and using gas at a higher temperature. Examples show the effect of varying the steam partial pressure and the space velocity, and of using a steam-containing gas from an inert gas generator in place of steam. The catalyst is suitable for use in the hydrocatalytic desulphurisation of petroleum feedstocks by the autofining process described in Specifications 654,152, 669,536, 669,553 and 697,083. Specifications 719,627 and 747,663 also are referred to.
