Abstract
Spent silica-magnesia catalyst having a carbonaceous deposit thereon is, before or after the burning off of such deposits, hydrated with liquid water under suitable conditions of temperature and pressure, preferably at or below 100 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure, such that the amount of water retained by the hydrated catalyst is between 5 and 50 per cent by weight of the catalyst. The hydration may be applied to part only of the catalyst withdrawn for example from a hydrocarbon cracking reactor, the thus hydrated catalyst mixed with the main body of withdrawn catalyst and the whole subjected to conventional burning treatment. Alternatively, subsequent to the burning treatment on the whole of the withdrawn catalyst, part is recycled to the reactor directly whilst a portion is hydrated before being recycled.
