Hydrocarbons.-The hot parts of apparatus in which hydrocarbons are treated at high temperature are coated with lustrous carbon to prevent deposition of soot. Lustrous carbon (Glanzkohl) is a form of carbon deposited from hydrocarbons at temperatures above 650‹ C. The process is generally applicable to catalytic and other processes involving heat treatment of hydrocarbons, including cracking processes. According to an example, a mixture of ethylene, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide is passed through a copper tube containing silica gel coated with lustrous carbon, whereupon benzene hydrocarbons are produced.
