Abstract
In a fluidized or moving-bed process for the cracking of feedstocks derived from petroleum, catalyst is circulated between a reactor and a regenerator such that at least a portion of the catalyst is subjected to the influence of a magnetic field to remove a small portion of material having a higher content of magnetic material than the majority of the catalyst. Preferably the feedstocks cracked boil above 250 DEG C. and the catalyst used is SiO2/A12O3. The catalyst may be treated after regeneration but before passing back to the reactor. A portion of the catalyst may be bled off from the main stream, subjected to the influence of the magnetic field and returned. Preferably the whole of the circulating catalyst stream is subjected to the influence of the magnetic field.
