Abstract

PURPOSE: To save a make-up catalyst, by withdrawing part of the catalyst contained in the unit, selecting the withdrawn catalyst by a high-gradient magnetic separator and recirculating only that portion of the catalyst which is not attracted by the magnet, in the fluidized catalytic cracking of heavy oil containing a distillation residue.
CONSTITUTION: In the fluidized catalytic cracking of heavy oil containing a distillation residue, part of the catalyst fluidized in the cracking unit is withdrawn and replaced with a fresh catalyst in order to prevent lowering of conversion due to deposition, on the catalyst, of metals contained in the oil, such as Ni and iron. During this process, the withdrawn catalyst is separated into a portion not attracted and a portion attracted by a high-gradient magnetic separator. The nonattracted portion which has still a high activity and selectivity is circulated to the cracking unit and reused. This saves a make-up catalyst, while preventing increase of coke and hydrogen in the product and decrease of conversion.
