Abstract
A petroleum distillate, from a crude oil, boiling above 220 DEG C and constituting at least 50% of the total gas oil of said crude oil is contacted in admixture with a lower boiling distillate, for example kerosine, which constitutes 50-60% vol. of the total feedstock, in the presence of hydrogen, at at least 400 DEG C., but below the temperature at which 20% or more of the feedstock is converted to material boiling below 150 DEG C., a pressure of 7-55 kg./cm.2, L.H.S.V. not exceeding 3, the temperature and space velocity being correlated so that the pour point of the stabilized distillate is at least 5 DEG C. below that of the feedstock, with a catalyst comprising molybdenum oxide, with or without cobalt oxide, on an alumina-silica support. The hydrogen:hydrocarbon mole ratio is preferably between 5:1 and 20:1.
