Abstract
Paraffin wax is recovered from hydrocarbon mixtures, especially of petroleum origin, by subjecting the mixture to catalytic hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst comprising the oxides of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum incorporated with a support, at a temperature of 150 DEG -340 DEG C. and a pressure of 5 ats.-80 ats. prior to removal of the wax. The hydrogen flow rate may be 5-150 vols. H2/vol. oil. The space velocity of the oil may be 0.5-6 vols. oil/vol. catalyst/hour. The catalyst support is preferably a metal oxide, such as activated alumina. The wax recovery is best effected by conventional solvent dewaxing, especially using a mixture of MIBK and MEK.
