Abstract
558,385. Purifying oils. INTERNATIONAL CATALYTIC OIL PROCESSES CORPORATION. Aug. 11, 1941, No. 10205. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] The sulphur content of petroleum naphtha containing a relatively high quantity of sulphur (at least 0.2 per cent.) is reduced and a high quality motor fuel of improved anti-knock quality with decreased sulphur content is produced by treating the naphtha in the vapour state with hydrogen gas in contact with a catalyst comprising an oxide of a metal selected from the left-hand column of Group VI under temperature and pressure conditions and at a space velocity which permit the aliphatic hydrocarbons to be largely dehydrogenated and cyclized to aromatic hydrocarbons and to effect the separation of sulphur as an inorganic sulphide. The catalyst may be molybdenum or chromium oxide supported on activated alumina. A number of reactors arranged in parallel relationship manifolded with fluid inlets and outlets so that the catalyst in any reactor may be regenerated, may be used. A stationary or moving bed type of reactor may be used. Examples are given of the treatment of a naphtha stock of California origin blended with a cracked naphtha, and of a dehexanised, cracked California naphtha. Specification 549,570 is referred to.
