Abstract

1471228 Jet fuels LUMMUS CO 26 June 1974 [12 July 1973] 28466/74 Addition to 1399108 Heading C5E Jet fuel is produced by a process in which the aromatic content of a hydrocarbon feed boiling in the range 135-550‹ F. and containing not more than 20 p.p.m. sulphur is reduced in two stages and which comprises the steps of: (a) hydrogenating the feed 43 or 46 in cocurrent contact with a hydrogen-rich gas in a first zone 16 at 250-575‹ F. in the presence of a platinum group metal catalyst; (b) separating the effluent into a gas phase, comprising hydrogen and vaporized liquid materials, and a partially hydrogenated liquid hydrocarbon effluent; (c) hydrogenating the liquid hydrocarbon effluent with a countercurrent of hydrogen in a second zone 18 at 200-550‹ F. in contact with a nickel catalyst; and (d) separating the effluent from the second zone into a gas phase, comprising hydrogen and vaporized liquid material, and a liquid phase effluent 50 comprising the jet fuel. As shown, the two zones 16 and 18 can be arranged in a single reactor 10 with the gaseous portions of the effluents from the two zones being combined in line 18 and recycled to the first zone; fresh hydrogen 48 being passed into the second zone 18. The catalyst used in the first zone can be platinum on alumina and that in the second zone can be nickel on kieselguhr. The feed can be a straight-run kerosene which has been desulphurized to reduce its sulphur content to below 20 p.p.m.
