Abstract
1399108 Jet fuels LUMMUS CO 31 Aug 1972 [2 Sept 1971] 40480/72 Heading C5E A petroleum feed boiling in the range 135 to 550 F. is passed from line 43 to 46 through a catalyst bed 16 at 250-575 F. in admixture with a cocurrent of hydrogen. The liquid effluent from the bed 16 is then contacted at 200- 500 F. with a counter-current 48 of hydrogen in the catalyst bed 18 to produce a stream 50 of jet fuel. The gaseous effluents from the zones 16 and 18, comprising hydrogen and normally liquid hydrocarbons are cooled at 52, 30 and 32 and separated at 34 into a stream 36 of recycle hydrogen and a liquid stream 44 which is recycled. The catalysts used can be Raney nickel or Ni, Pt or Pd on alumina, silica, kieselguhr, diatomaceous earth, magnesia or zirconia. Suitable feeds are hydrodesulphurized straight-run kerosene, light and heavy naphthas, catalytically cracked cycle oil and furnace oil. The jet fuel produced can have an aromatics content of below 1À5 vol per cent.
