Abstract
1463661 Producing methane BRITISH GAS CORP 8 Feb 1974 [15 Feb 1973] 7561/73 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] A process for producing methane-containing gas by catalytic steam reforming in which either the activity for hydrocarbon reforming of a catalyst, which has been deactivated by the formation thereon of a layer of polymer during previous reforming of hydrocarbons, is restored or the life of the catalyst is prolonged comprises passing a mixture of steam and the vapour of an aliphatic alcohol over the steam reforming catalyst; the steam-alcohol mixture being preheated to a temperature of at least 350‹ C. such that the catalyst bed temperature is maintained within the range 400-600‹ C. The process can be carried out by including the alcohol vapour in a steam- and hydrocarbon-feed to the reforming zone or by using a mixture of steam and alcohol vapour to regenerate a catalyst which has been deactivated during the treatment of a mixture of steam and hydrocarbon under steam reforming or hydrogasification conditions. The aliphatic alcohol used is suitably methanol and can be used in amounts of 1-30 parts by weight per 100 parts of hydrocarbon feed. A coprecipitated nickel-alumina catalyst containing 0À6% potassium and a ruthenium-zinc-alumina catalyst are used in Examples to reform a light petroleum distillate and mixtures of the distillate with kerosene or xylene.
